In Jules Verne’s novel, Phileas Fogg’s bet was inspired by a Telegraph article on the opening of a train line allowing, for the first time, a passage across India from Bombay to Calcutta via Allahabad. This plus the recently opened Suez Canal and America’s Transcontinental train meant that his extraordinary journey around the world in 80 days was ‘achievable’.
However, the Telegraph had ‘jumped the gun’, 50 miles of track was incomplete, so he hired an elephant, rescued a young widow from sacrifice and continued by train from Allahabad to Calcutta. This itinerary follows, in spirit, the journey of Phileas Fogg, with a taste of the railways combined with air and road travel! Commence in Bombay at the Taj Palace overlooking the ‘Gateway to India’, and pass through India’s spiritual heartland to stay at the iconic Oberoi in colonial Calcutta and visit remote Bhubaneshwar & princely Hyderabad.
