Day 1 Fly overnight from London Heathrow to Amritsar via Delhi.

Day 2 Transfer to the 5-star Hyatt Hotel for two nights. Evening Palki ceremony at the Golden Temple.

Day 3 Visit the Golden Temple, volunteer kitchens and Jallianwala Bagh. Optional Wagah border 'Changing of the Guard' ceremony (£13, bookable locally). (B)

Day 4 Early morning train to Ambala (4 hrs), by road to Kandaghat and ‘Toy Train’ to Shimla (6 hrs). Two nights at the 5-star Oberoi Cecil Hotel. (B, D)

Day 5 Visit the Vice Regal Lodge, museum and the Mall. Afternoon at leisure. (B)

Day 6 Travel to Chandigarh (5 hrs) and fly to Delhi for two nights at the heritage Maidens Hotel. (B, D)

Day 7 Tour including India Gate, Jama Mosque, Raj Ghat, the Gandhi museum, Qutub Minar and drive past the Red Fort, parliament and Viceroy's House. (B)

Day 8 Visit the Transport Museum then continue to Jaipur (5 hrs) for two nights at the 4-star ITC Rajputana . (B)

Day 13 Early visit to the Taj Mahal. Visit Agra Fort, then the 'Baby Taj' and Mughal garden with views across the river to the Taj Mahal. (B)

Day 14 Travel to Lucknow (7 hrs). Visit La Martiniere college. Overnight at the 5-star Vivanta by Taj. Dinner at Khajurgaon Palace. (B, D)

Day 15 Visit Bada Imambada and The Residency. Continue to Varanasi (6 hrs) for two nights at the 4-star Hotel Radisson. (B)

Day 16 Early morning boat on the Ganges including breakfast at Brijrama Palace, overlooking the Ghats. Visit Sarnath, where Lord Buddha preached. Evening Aarti ceremony by the Ganges. (B)

Day 17 Fly to Mumbai for overnight at the 5-star Oberoi Hotel, sea view rooms. City tour including Marine Drive, the Gateway of India, Victoria Terminus and the Prince of Wales Museum. View the laundries of Dhobi Ghat. (B)

Day 18 Morning walk along the Kala Ghoda area and view the Dabbawalla lunch carriers. Fly to Cochin for two nights at the 4-star boutique 'CGH Earth' Hotel Eighth Bastion. (B)

Day 19 Visit the backwaters fishing village of Kumbalanghi. Kathakali classical dance performance. Cooking demonstration and dinner at a family home. (B, L, D)

Day 20 Walking tour of Fort Cochin, the Synagogue and Mattancherry Palace. Board a Keralan houseboat for an overnight backwaters cruise. Canoe on the smaller canals. (B, L, D)

Day 21 Disembark and transfer to Lake Vembanad. Free time and overnight at the 4-star 'CGH Earth' Coconut Lagoon. (B)
