Gilded pagodas, spectacular archaeological sites, stunning mountains and a fascinating traditional culture and local life are among the reasons to visit Myanmar (Burma).
Bagan, a city of 3,000 pagodas, is one of Asia’s great archaeological treasures. According to Sir James Scott “Bagan is in many respects the most remarkable religious city in the world… the whole space is thickly studded with pagodas of all sizes and shapes… you cannot move a foot or hand without touching something sacred”. The view across Bagan Plain remains one of the most striking, redbrick pagodas interrupted by tall white spires reaching skywards.
Mandalay is the former British colonial capital and the market town for neighbouring mountain regions.
Magical Inle lake shows a unique aquatic way of life created when the local king refused permission for the Intha people to build on dry land. Villages, monasteries, temples and gardens rest serenely on stilts.
Burma’s main city, Yangon is a city of style and dilapidated grandeur with vibrant street life, busy river front and colonial architecture.
