Improved communications for Zimbabwe have enabled this excellently priced safari, combining a new flight to Victoria Falls with good tarmac roads through Zambezi National Park to Botswana and to Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s largest wildlife reserve.
The mighty Zambezi River appears at its most spectacular at Victoria Falls, where the flow level peaks in May when spray is almost too much for good viewing (lowest in November).
Botswana’s Chobe National Park is a prolific year-round wildlife area renowned for buffalo and elephant herds, with big cats most visible in the dry season (May-Oct) when the wildlife concentrates around water.
Hwange, the royal hunting ground of Matabele King Mzilikazi and a reserve since 1928 is home to 400 bird species and 100 species of mammals, most notably elephant, zebra, buffalo, giraffe, impala, wildebeest and sable. The many waterholes facilitate game viewing, especially predators, as wildlife congregates during the dry season (May-Oct) when the bush dries out.
