Travel from the Eastern Shores of Africa to the Cape. Join an exquisite journey on Rovos Rail, not only a wonderful itinerary for train enthusiasts but also a unique Safari experience. After a stop in Dar es Salaam, this epic rail journey passes through part of the vast Selous Game Reserve before ascending the Great Rift Valley. Cross into Zambia, where you can enjoy a bush walk and a visit to Chisimba Falls. Journey across the famed Zambezi River, over the bridge that was part of the original route intended to link the Cape to Cairo at the beginning of the 20th century. Overnight at the majestic Victoria Falls Hotel, home of the magnificent waterfall, and so onto Botswana and South Africa to the Madikwe Game Reserve for a relaxed two-night stay with game drives before we travel to resplendent Cape Town for two nights at the Mount Nelson Hotel.

Day 1 Fly from London Heathrow via Amsterdam to Dar es Salaam, coastal city and former capital. Transfer to the Ramada Resort Hotel for two nights.

Day 2 Today travel to the 'Spice Island' of Zanzibar. Take a morning flight and choose from a range of optional excursions. Explore Stone Town, or take a spice tour, travel south to Kizimkazi and take a boat trip to see dolphins, or travel to Jozani in search of Red Colobus and Blue Sykes Monkeys. Late, afternoon flight to Dar es Salaam. (B)

Day 3 Board Rovos Rail in the late morning, to travel the Tazara line. Guests may freshen up in their suites before joining fellow travellers in the lounge or observation car, which will be at the front of the train for the first 72 hours. The train travels the fertile lands of Tanzania towards the Selous Game Reserve. (B, L, D)

Day 4 Breakfast is served before a game visit in the Selous, the largest game reserve in Africa. Its elaborate and unique beauty contribute to its UNESCO World Heritage status. Enjoy lunch as we pass Udzungwa Mountains enroute to Mlimba. (B, L, D)

Day 5 The train ascends the escarpment, with a stop in Makambako and continues through forests of Baobabs enroute to Mbeya and Tunduma. (B, L, D)

Day 6 There will be lectures on board as we travel between Tanzania and Zambia. The train continues southwest to Kasama for a visit to Chisimba Falls. (B, L, D)

Day 7 A day at leisure to enjoy the delights of Rovos. We reach the southern end of the Tazara line at Kapiri Mposhi where the train is turned, before continuing to Ngwerere and Lusaka, capital of Zambia. (B, L, D)

Day 8 From Lusaka cross the Kafue railway bridge – a 477-metre long steel girder truss bridge of 13 spans, each at 33 metres, supported on concrete piers. Continue to Zimbabwe. (B, L, D)

Day 9 Morning arrival at Livingstone, cross into Zimbabwe, crossing at the Second Gorge in the falls. Arrive at the incomparable Victoria Falls. Disembark for an overnight stay. Enjoy lunch and later a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River followed by dinner in the Livingstone Room of the Victoria Falls Hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 10 The day is at leisure at the Victoria Falls where there are a number of optional excursions available. Reboard Rovos and continue our journey to Bulawayo. (B, L, D)

Day 11 Travels towards Botswana for border formalities at Plumtree then southwards through Francistown and Serule, across the Tropic of Capricorn via Mahalapye to Gaborone, capital of Botswana. (B, L, D)

Day 12 Disembark at Gaborone for Madikwe Game Reserve and the Tau Lodge for a two-night stay. Situated in northwest South Africa, abutting the Botswana border, close to the Kalahari Desert and bordered by the Dwarsberg Mountains, Madikwe is a fine example of community-based wildlife conservation. Afternoon game drive. (B, L, D)

Day 13 Early morning game drive exploring at first light. With a bird population of over 250 species and a spectacular diversity of wildlife, enjoy the tranquility of nature at your doorstep. (B, L, D)

Day 14 One last morning game drive before breakfast then transfer to the train at Zeerust. Continue our journey traversing the Magaliesberg Mountains, a range of low hills stretching 120 kms from Pretoria to Rustenberg, enroute to Krugersdorp. (B, L, D)

Day 15 Travel north through the goldfields to Pretoria for a city tour, with time to explore Rovos’ private station and locomotive workshops where the team have spent nearly 30 years preserving what little is left of the era of steam and the golden age of rail travel. Continue south towards Kingswood for Kimberley. (B, L, D)

Day 16 Just before arriving at Kimberley a shallow lake appears on the right-hand side of the train where often there are spectacular flocks of Lesser Flamingo’s (approx. 23,000). On arrival enjoy a tour of the city, Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole. Continue through the Karoo via Beaufort West to Matjiesfontein. Enjoy a 1920’s themed dinner on board. (B, L, D)

Day 17 There is the opportunity to disembark at Whitehill Siding and walk the 5 kms into Matjiesfontein. Enjoy a stroll through this historic village before we pass through Touws River, descending the Hex River Pass and passing through four tunnels. On the approach to Cape Town the broad valley hosts hundreds of grape producing farms. Disembark and transfer to the Mount Nelson Hotel for a two night stay. (B, L)

Day 18 Full day Cape Point tour; drive via Camps Bay to Hout Bay for a boat cruise to Duiker (seal) Island, continue via scenic Chapman’s Peak Drive to the reserve and enjoy the views at Cape Point before relaxing over a seafood lunch. Visit the penguin colony at Boulders Beach before returning to Cape Town. Farewell Dinner at the Mount Nelson Hotel.

Day 19 Day at leisure in Cape Town, optional city tour of before the early evening transfer to the airport and return flight to London.

Day 20 Arrive London.
