Namibia by Private Train

Unmatched for sheer natural beauty Namibia is a true land of contrast and colour, explore the wonders of this African nation that reveals more than just a safari destination

The word ‘namib’ translates as ‘vast place.’ To experience the best of Namibia vast distances need to be covered, indeed the enormity of this extraordinary country with varied roads and tiny populations make it quite formidable to explore.

A comfortable and convenient way to explore the best of the natural wonders and wildlife is by rail. Whilst local trains are not a suggested option, we can fully recommend the Dune Express routing of the popular Shongololo Express, operated from South Africa by our friends at Rovos Rail.

The stark vistas of the Northern Cape and Karoo contrast with the garden city of Pretoria. This 12 day rail journey, covering some 3447 kms, enables travel from the savannahs of the Highveld to the Atlantic, visiting the oldest desert on the planet. There are few more fascinating desert realms than the Namib with seas of multi-toned wind-sculpted dunes and an exoticism of plants and animals.

Namibia is home to the world’s largest population of free roaming cheetah. Big cats, elephants and black rhinos patrol Etosha, Namibia’s greatest national park, but tour this beautiful land and you’ll discover so much more – surprising German architecture and magnificent sand dunes, raw scrub desert.

Sossusvlei in the Namib-Naukluft National Park is famed for its stunning and ever changing sand dunes of red, pink and orange, the Kalahari for the untamed beauty of its seemingly endless gold-grass plains and Fish River Canyon as the largest canyon in the southern hemisphere.

This may be Africa’s youngest independent country but it can more than hold its own in terms of attractions; it is indeed an unforgettable and quite remarkable journey!
