Volcanic Réunion & Mauritius

Traverse two breathtaking and unspoilt Indian Ocean islands

The spectacular natural treasures of the volcanic island of Réunion are relatively unexplored with mass tourism having passed this stunning destination by. Réunion has two major mountain zones, the Cirques of Cilaos, Salazie and Mafate, and the active volcano Piton de la Fournaise, which erupts regularly. The winding mountain road leading to the dramatic Cirque de Cilaos reveals colourful fields of flowers, forests of indigenous trees, soaring rock faces and pounding waterfalls. The name ‘Cilaos’ is said to originate from the Malagasy word Tsilaosa, meaning “the place one never leaves” and was once a refuge for runaway slaves.

The island was uninhabited when discovered by the Portuguese in 1513 and from the 17th to the 19th centuries was given its ethnic mix by a combination of French immigration, supplemented by influxes of Africans, Chinese, Malays and Malabar Indians. The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 however lost the island its importance as a stopover on the East Indies trade routes. It is still a French department and as such part of the European Union, where the traveller may expect a sophisticated infrastructure and high standard of hygiene.

Neighbouring Mauritius is probably best known for its spectacular beaches but when further explored has much more to offer including; sugar cane plantations, net-covered orchids, forests, gorges, waterfalls and Hindu temples.

These remote Indian Ocean islands when combined, complement each other and make a wonderful contrast of stunning natural scenery. Enjoy an abundance of wildly dramatic landscapes, forbidding mountains with lush forests, volcanoes, flora and fauna of all types, including orchids of every description.
