The Holy Family in Egypt

In the footsteps of the Holy Family through Egypt between Asyut and Coptic Cairo revealing the Coptic heritage of Egypt including the world’s oldest monasteries

The flight of the Holy Family into Egypt is recounted in the New Testament in the Gospel of Matthew where it is written in Matthew 2:13 “…behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt…for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him”.

The Holy Family journeyed from Bethlehem, through Sinai to Cairo, then on and along the Nile south to Asyut, staying at various villages. This significant event in Egypt’s history resulted in the Coptic Christian era with some of the world’s first monasteries built in each place, most dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Indeed Coptic means Egyptian and the Coptic heritage is an important part of Egypt’s history. The Church of Abu Serga (St. Sergius) in Old Cairo, the Holy Virgin Church in Maadi and the three monasteries in Wadi el Natrun; Syrian, Paromeos and St. Bishoy are just three of the most important locations visited on this pilgrimage.

Undertake this journey on a cruise along the Nile on a specially thought-out itinerary by our trusted Egyptian partners, to encompass many sites of the Holy Family.
