Aida on the Nile

Witness Verdi’s masterpiece, the iconic Aida at the temple of Queen Hatshepsut – we have secured a limited number of tickets, so early booking recommended!

It has just been confirmed that performances of Aida will take place at the Temple of Hatshepsut in Ancient Thebes (now Luxor) in association with Cairo Opera House. This spectacular operatic showcase and timeless legend of love, intrigue and betrayal will be staged here for the first time in many years. For any lover of Opera or Egypt, this is surely a once-in-a-lifetime experience that should be seized! (No further dates are announced).

Giuseppe Verdi wrote the opera for the opening of the Suez canal but never realised his dream of staging Aida in its actual setting. The nearest he came was a performance at Cairo Opera House in 1871.

Herodotus wrote “Egypt is the gift of the Nile” and a medieval Arab poet continued “and the Nile is the gift of the Good God”. Thebes in Upper Egypt reveals magnificent temples and tombs were built by the 18th-20th dynasty New Kingdom pharaohs, reaching to Nubia and Abu Simbel. Egypt’s tourism is returning to normal, helping the economy, the local communities and all those who depend upon the tourist industry. Reports from returning visitors are positive and especially our regular Egypt travellers are enjoying the quieter environment.
