The Garden Isle of Madeira

A sub-tropical isle, where floral displays form kaleidoscopes of colour, traditional buildings blend seamlessly with bucolic landscapes and spectacular cliffs rise sheer from the Atlantic Ocean shore

Combining a distinctly Portuguese nature with more than a nod to British traditions; enjoying its own microclimate of year-round temperate weather; and covering its soaring cliffs and scenic mountains with quaint houses and characterful villages, forest trails and fantastic flora; Madeira is an inimitable one-off. The glorious ‘garden isle’ is a riot of colour and variety, its mineral-rich volcanic soils supporting tropical flowers and exotic fruits. Spreading behind a curve of ocean-front cliffs, the town is a natural amphitheatre, watching the drama of the Atlantic; and forms a fabulous base from which to explore. In a balanced blend of leisure time and guided discovery, this short break includes Funchal; a tour through rural valleys and villages, to the island’s north-eastern coast, seeing Santana’s triangular houses, plus head west, to visit the gardens of a private Quinta, in the picturesque fishing town of Câmara de Lobos, with spectacular views from Cabo Girão.
