"On previous, enjoyable visits to Morocco we had stayed in standard Moroccan 4 or 5 star hotels but this time chose special accommodations that turned a good holiday into an unforgettable experience. Nowhere is it truer than in Morocco that if you stay inside the walls of the old town, known as the 'Medina', you will experience the country's magic with every step, whereas staying at modern hotels outside distances you from the colours and history and atmosphere of this uniquely different country.
As well as visiting the important sights, we experienced the feel of Morocco and its people. The 'VJV' Riad in Marrakech (Riad Blanc) was perfectly positioned to explore the medina and we enjoyed excellent service and food. The Kasbah du Toubkal in the Atlas Mountains lies at the foot of Toubkal, North Africa's highest mountain. Only reachable on foot, its dramatic location was unequalled and even without undertaking much hiking our stay was very special. The hotel was re-constructed with the help of two English brothers in partnership with local people and maintains its special character with Berber food and service. We also visited its new venture, the beautiful Riad Imlil with fantastic views of the High Atlas and met the friendly manager. The ancient port of Essaouira was a revelation allowing for relaxation as well as exploration of a smaller 'manageable' medina.
We managed to sneak into Marrakech's newly re-opened and restored classic hotel, La Mamounia, where Churchill stayed - beyond our budget but well worth a look - and dinner at a 'Riad restaurant' was an amazing finale!" (January 2010).
