View from the Inside: Russia
Written by Heather Keene, Sales Team Leader at Voyages Jules Verne who recently travelled to Russia.
"I have recently returned from my trip to Russia where we travelled from St. Petersburg to Moscow cruising the waterways that link these two fascinating cities.
Although quicker and more direct to travel by plane or train, this 10-night cruise was a truly unique way of connecting the two cities, and allowed a deeper look into Russia’s rural areas, visiting its hidden treasures along the way.
We started with a 2 day tour of the cultural city St. Petersburg, taking in views of the impressive St. Isaacs & the Smolny Cathedrals, Winter Palace & of course getting lost in the Hermitage among the many masterpieces. However, the highlight was definitely the afternoon visit exploring the breath-catching Catherine’s Palace in Pushkin; Its vastness, colour, artwork and attention to every detail made this a spectacular visit giving a real insight into a fascinating history.
Sailing on the MS Yesenin, a comfortable, intimate vessel started on day 3. Travelling in Autumn time meant that the gentle scenery was extremely picturesque and with very little river traffic, sitting out on the sundeck or observation lounge made for a relaxing cruise.
However, with the many history talks provided by the Voyages Jules Verne tour manager, whose knowledge and obvious interest in Russia kept you mesmorised throughout and the Russian language, traditional dancing and singing lessons, there was always something to keep you busy in between stops, if you desired.
In the evenings we were kept entertained by the talented vessel musicians ‘Russian Surprise’, putting on impressive performances most nights, ranging from Classical to traditional folk music.
The rest of the crew were always friendly and kept the vessel operation running smoothly.
Arriving in Moscow, a highlight was seeing ‘Moscow by night’. Although impressive during the day, Red Square lit up looks magical. Away from the hustle and bustle during the day, at night it sets a completely different calming atmosphere.
A ride on the tube was a must; so as to witness the unique chandelier clad metro stations with their bronze statues, artworks and Mosaics – it was quite hard to believe these were in a public area and not a museum.
After not really knowing what to expect from Russia, my trip revealed a country full of interesting history, artwork, architecture and people; I had an amazing time and would recommend this cruise to all."
