View from the Inside: Estonia
Written by Jennifer Saunders, Sales Team Leader at Voyages Jules Verne who recently travelled to Estonia.
"I recently travelled to Estonia which is an ideal destination if you are looking for a short European break.
Most of my time was spent in Tallinn, Estonia's capital city, which has managed to retain much of its medieval charm whilst also developing a unique culture, as evident in it being voted 'European Capital of Culture' for 2011.
I was particularly impressed with the character and appeal of Tallinn's Old Town which is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Many hours can be spent wandering around the quaint, medieval streets home to many shops, cafes and restaurants waiting to be discovered. Walking tours are a perfect way to get to know the city. You will find many fascinating churches and museums as you explore. The Town Hall Pharmacy is definitely worth a visit, it is one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe which is still in operation.
One of the main highlights for me was a stunning panorama with views across the Old Town marked by its many picturesque church steeples and domes, as well as being lucky enough to visit the 'Town Hall Square' at its centre whilst a traditional local market was taking place.
I also had the opportunity to visit nearby Kadriorg with its attractive Palace, the former palace of Peter the Great. The surrounding grounds and gardens should cetainly not be missed as well as the Art museum of Estonia also housed within the grounds.
Tallinn is a perfect destination if you are looking for a short break combining both history and culture. I will definitely be looking to return again to explore more of what Estonia has to offer."
