Istanbul - European Capital of Culture 2010

Istanbul, already a city of wonder and beauty, fascinating history, ancient cultures and vibrant arts has been declared 'European Capital of Culture 2010'. With its sublime Ottoman mosques and Byzantine churches, its staggering museums, sprawling palaces and bustling bazaars, Istanbul is the ideal unforgettable city break. This year, celebrations highlight everything that makes the city special; the grand Topkapi Palace built in the 15th century and initially the primary residence for the Ottoman Sultans for nearly 4 centuries, now the palace is a museum containing the most holy relics of the Muslim world; ancient St. Sofia one of the greatest legacies of the Byzantine empire; the magnificent Blue Mosque built between 1609 and 1616 and still used as a mosque today; and the Bosphorus, the boundary between Europe and Asia.
