Travelling in Madagascar

General Notes

  • In visiting the most important and fascinating regions of Madagascar, we are obliged to cover long distances that involve extended journey times with few opportunities for stops en-route.
  • Travelling by rail in Madagascar is a wonderful opportunity to witness otherwise inaccessible regions of natural beauty. However, delays may be expected on some occasions and timetables are not always strictly adhered to.
  • Mobility – our arrangement involves a moderate amount of walking, especially at the national parks, frequently over uneven terrain, so a degree of fitness and mobility is essential. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are able to keep up with the group and its activities
  • Hotels in Madagascar are of a simple 2–3 star standard with a rustic charm consistent with the local environment. Rooms have private facilities. Due to very occasional electricity shortages we recommend taking a torch.
  • Temperatures are cooler in the highlands, especially in the mornings and evenings. We recommend taking a raincoat, good walking shoes, a hat and high factor sunscreen, especially for visits to the national parks, where there will be a certain amount of exposure to the elements.
  • It is advisable to take currency in Euros or pounds sterling to change upon arrival. Credit cards are generally not accepted in hotels outside of the capital.
  • Tipping during meals, for local guides as well as tour guides and drivers, is expected in Madagascar and further guidance will be provided before travel.
  • Malagasy cuisine is based on rice with a dressing of spicy sauces, meat, vegetables and seasoning, usually served with hot peppers. French-influenced cuisine is also common but most hotels offer a limited set menu so please advise us in advance of any special dietary requirements in advance.
  • There is currently a risk of Malaria in some regions of the country and it is advisable to contact your doctor or pharmacist prior to travel. Very few hotels provide mosquito nets or coils as standard. We recommend that you take a strong repellant.
