Itinerary 2 - 2013
Day 1 Fly overnight from London Heathrow to Lima via Madrid.
Day 2 Early morning arrival in Lima and transfer to your chosen hotel for overnight. An afternoon tour of the Peruvian capital includes the impressive buildings of the Plaza de Armas, the UNESCO World Heritage 17th-century church of San Francisco and the hacienda-housed Larco Herrera Museum for the private visit and cocktail reception.
Day 3 Fly to Cuzco (3,400 metres) and transfer to the Sacred Valley (2,400 metres) for two nights at your chosen hotel, visiting Awanakancha and Pisac Market en route.
Day 4 Visit Moray Terraces, Maras Salt Mines and Ollantaytambo to view the best surviving example of Inca town planning.
Day 5 Join the Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes before the final ascent by road to Machu Picchu. Tour the ruins with the rest of the day at leisure to explore the site. Overnight at your chosen hotel in Aguas Calientes, including dinner.
Day 6 A morning at leisure and time to ascend to the archaeological site once more for independent exploration† before returning by rail and road to Cuzco (4 hrs) in the afternoon. Two nights at your chosen hotel.
Day 7 Sightseeing includes the Temple of the Sun, Cathedral and the Plaza de Armas, the imposing Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman, the underground temple of Kenko and the Inca baths of Tambo Machay are also visited.
Day 8 Journey across the Andean high plain by road visiting Andahuaylillas Church, considered to be the ‘Sistine Chapel’ of the Americas and Raqchi ruins. Lunch included before reaching Puno (5 hrs) on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest commercially navigable lake in the world at 3,812 metres, it is also the largest lake in South America by water volume. Stay two nights at your chosen hotel.
Day 9 A morning visit to the floating islands of the Uros. These pre-Incan people still live on islets made from the tortora reeds of Lake Titicaca. According to legend the Uros tribe predates the sun but because of their simple and precarious lifestyle they were never valued by the Incas even though their society continues to thrive to the present day. Lunch on Taquile Island and a visit is included.
Day 10 Fly from Juliaca to Lima and overnight at your chosen hotel.
Day 11 Return flight to London via Madrid.
Day 12 Arrive Heathrow.
