This extraordinary journey explores the depths of Canada’s Yukon and Northwest Territories, with a visit to Alaska, travelling across frontiers and unspoilt wilderness to the shores of the Arctic Ocean, during the phenomenon of the Midnight Sun, occurring in latitudes within the Arctic and Antarctic circles where the sun remains visible at local midnight. In partnership with our local agent, who specialise in creating out of the ordinary programmes, we are proud to present this innovative itinerary to a land which is virtually untouched by tourism and considered inaccessible.
Connecting the Yukon and Northwest Territories is the legendary Dempster Highway, a 747-kilometre road through Arctic wilderness starting in Dawson City and ending in Inuvik. Only completed in the early 1980s, one of the highlights is the crossing of the Arctic Circle, indicated by a modest roadside sign. A significant moment in Canadian history was the finding of gold at Bonanza Creek in 1896 that unleashed the frenzied Klondike Gold Rush, drawing thousands from across the world to cash in on the find. Even one of Jules Verne’s last books, Le Volcan d’Or (The Volcano of Gold), dealt with the difficulties endured by the gold-seekers in the Klondike. During their royal tour of Canada, newlyweds the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited Yellowknife in Northwest Territories, which is home to the Prince of Wales Museum, opened by His Royal Highness in 1979.
