Frankincense & Fortresses

The Sultanate of Oman – an ancient cradle of civilisation

7 nights from £1025

Oman is a corner of Arabia that was virtually closed to the world for many years. A further relaxation of the issuing of tourist visas enables us to arrange for small parties of visitors to see and enjoy the historical heritage and colourful charm of this little known country which borders the United Arab Emirates. Blessed with outstanding beauty it boasts an unspoiled, pristine coastline and the majestic Hajar Mountains are contrasted with vast desert wastes interspersed with wadis and abundant, lush vegetation. The uniqueness of Oman lies in its trading history with frankincense, one of the treasures of Arabia contributing to its ancient wealth and strategic importance. As the ‘Gateway to Arabia’ it reached its peak in the 19th century under Sultan Said bin Sultan with control of ports as far as the east coast of Africa including Mombasa and Zanzibar.
