Spice of India

A flavour of Kerala, staying at luxury heritage hotels and on a houseboat

9 nights from £1227

Kerala is a world away from the hustle and bustle of north India. It is green, lush and tropical. Known as “God’s own country” this land is famed for its friendly people and relaxed way of life. This arrangement is also a world away from the usual hectic tour itineraries, operating at a leisurely pace that goes perfectly with the serene surroundings.

Cochin, the Venice of the East, is the perfect introduction. Trading in spices for centuries the area has attracted Jewish, Spanish and Dutch settlers and was the initial burial place of Vasco de Gama. A lively port, built on several islands the old town of Fort Cochin is famed for its antique shops and Chinese fishing nets. Further south, time has stood still. Movement of rice was on the wooden style dhows that ply the backwaters and a night on one of these converted houseboats is an unforgettable experience. In addition there is a visit to a wildlife park, a performance of the colourful Kathakali dance and the final days spent at a luxury beach property will allow guests to indulge in Ayurvedic massages and spa treatments that are famous in this region.
