Itinerary 1 (Jan-Apr 2012)
Day 1Fly direct from London Heathrow to Delhi.
Day 2 Early morning arrival and transfer to
Oberoi Maidens, a heritage hotel. Afternoon orientation tour of Delhi including India Gate, Raj Ghat, Jama Mosque and a drive past the Red Fort.
Day 3 Travel on the Shatabdi Express train† to Agra. On arrival visit Agra Fort before checking into the Clarks Shiraz Hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 4 Morning visit to the Taj Mahal. Continue to Ranthambore (6 hrs) for two nights at the Ranthambore Regency Hotel.
Day 5 Enjoy an early morning and a late afternoon game drive, giving the best opportunity to view the varied wildlife in the National Park. Between ‘safaris’ there is time to relax by the pool or explore the small town.
Day 6 Drive to
the pink city of Jaipur (4 hrs) and two nights at the
Hotel SMS. Optional evening Sound & Light show at the Amber Fort.
Day 7 Optional early morning balloon ride in the area of Amber Fort. Visit the Amber Fort, City Palace and Observatory, viewing the ‘Palace of the Winds’.
Day 8 Continue to Jodhpur (6 hrs), the blue city, for two nights at the Taj Gateway.
Day 9 A morning sightseeing tour of Jodhpur including the dramatic Mehrangarh Fort, standing 125 metres above the surrounding plain, and Jaswant Thada, an imposing white marble cenotaph.
Day 10 Morning drive to Jaisalmer (5 hrs), standing tall against miles of gleaming sand, for a two-night stay at Fort Rajwada.
Day 11 Visit the Fort, havellis and traditional Rajasthani houses. Late afternoon optional excursion to the Sam Sand Dunes for sunset and a camel ride.
Day 12 Travel to Jalore (7 hrs) and overnight at heritage hotel Ravla Bhenswara. Evening village walk.
Day 13 Continue to Udaipur (5 hrs) for two nights at the Hilltop Hotel.
Day 14 Morning sightseeing tour of Udaipur. A city of palaces both on the lake and the shore, it is home to a fine tradition of miniature paintings, including the City Palace museum. Afternoon optional boat ride.
Day 15 At leisure. Take the overnight night train† to Delhi
(12 hrs) or, for a supplement, spend an additional night at the Hilltop Hotel and fly the following afternoon to Delhi.
Day 16 Arrive into Delhi in the morning and transfer to the
Oberoi Maidens Hotel. Afternoon optional excursion to Qutab Minar before a late transfer to the airport and fly the following morning to London.
Day 17 Early morning flight to London arriving later the same day.
†Rail travel: Seating on board will be in air-conditioned Chair Class on the Shatabdi Express from Delhi to Agra and in 2nd class 2/3 tier air-conditioned couchettes from Udaipur to Delhi. This is the best reservable class on the train but a spirit of adventure is required. Pillows and sheets will be provided and packed dinner will be available from the hotel before departure at extra cost.
