Upstream Itinerary
Day 1 Fly from your chosen airport via Dubai to Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) arriving the following morning.
Day 2 Transfer to the 5-star Oberoi for an overnight stay.
Day 3 Morning sightseeing of Kolkata includes the Victoria memorial, St. John’s church and atmospheric South Park Street cemetery. Board the RV Sukapha and sail past the old Danish colony of Serampore to Barrackpore for a walk through the cantonment past the Semaphore Tower, Government House, the Temple of Fame, and Flagstaff House, its garden housing many of the British statues removed from central Kolkata.
Day 4 Sail to Chandernagore visiting the 18th century church and Dupleix’s House before continuing to the Dutch cemetery at Chinsura and the Portuguese church at Bandel.
Day 5 Land at Kalna and take cycle rickshaws to view the terracotta temples. Visit the temples of Mayapur before sailing on through the night to a mooring near Matiari.
Day 6 Visit the brassworking village of Matiari to view the process. Later cruise to the battlefield of Plassey, where in 1757 Clive of India defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah, and visit the commemorative obelisk.
Day 7 Travel by rickshaw to the Khushbagh, a peaceful Moghul-style garden. Visit also the Nawab’s great Hazarduari Palace, the Katra mosque and the fine late 18th-century palaces of Nashipara and Katgola.
Day 8 Moor at the sleepy village of Baranagar and visit the miniature terracotta temples. Continue up the Hoogly between banks lined with mustard fields and mango orchards to moor at Jangipur.
Day 9 A full-day excursion visits the town of Gaur, close to English Bazaar (now the town of Malda). Once one of India’s great cities, it has many mosque and palace remains.
Day 10 Transfer to New Farakka railway station for the 6-hour train journey to Kolkata. Overnight at the 5-star Oberoi Hotel.
Day 11 Transfer to the airport for the return flight to the UK via Dubai arriving later the same day.
