Vast sweeping panoramas, shifting sand banks, fascinating wildlife and religious associations make this a memorable journey and even more so as the RV Sukapha is one of the first passenger vessels to navigate these waters for 60 years.
Travellers familiar with India will know that cruising is the perfect way to enjoy this magical country. Far away from the frenetic roads, life on board offers a grandeur of scenery and a tranquillity that is unique. Fascinating sites are dotted along the shore and many are virtually unvisited by tourists but this is not to underestimate their historical importance. Patna has been inhabited for three millennia and was the capital for Chandragupta in the 4th century BC. This was a time considered to be the greatest cultural age of India which culminated in the rule of his grandson, Emperor Asoka, whose symbol, the chakra, is depicted on the national flag today. Bodhgaya was the scene of the Buddha’s enlightenment and fast forward to the time of the Raj when picturesque Monghyr became a favoured retirement settlement for the East India Company. The cruise ends at Farakka and transport to Kolkata will be by train. There is however also the possibility to continue by boat downstream along the Hoogly to Calcutta (Kolkata) on our 19-night Grand Ganges Voyage.
