8 nights from £2395
A land once ridden by formidable armies, enriched by history and culture can now be traversed on board the Golden Chariot. This unique train journey allows guests to relax and enjoy the comforts of a glorious yesteryear whilst the captivating scenery of Karnataka unfolds. Mysore, the former state capital, has always been associated with the royal families and it is renowned for its resplendent palaces, majestic buildings and strong traditions in music, dance, art and literature. The hunting grounds of the illustrious Maharajas now make up the Kabini Wildlife Reserve, home to elephants, tigers and leopards and an afternoon safari is followed by an overnight stay at a jungle lodge. This was also the territory of Tipu Sultan, a scholar, soldier and devout muslim, his mosque can still be visited.
Meanwhile the renowned Jain pilgrim centre of Hassan has the largest monolithic statue in Asia that can only be reached by ascending 700 steps. Fortunately palanquins are provided for those who wish to arrive in style! Pattadakal, with its beautifully chiselled temples, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and former ceremonial centre for the coronation of the Chalukyan kings, whilst Hampi, another UNESCO World Heritage site, was the seat of the largest empire in post-moghul India. The spectacular 14th-century ruins are rather remote but accessed in comfort by the Golden Chariot. This grand railway adventure culminates in Goa, the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ with its Portuguese churches, spice plantations, fabulous beaches and sunshine.
