Some itineraries so obviously represent the best way to cover a particular area that they are honed to perfection over time and replicated by many operators. One such arrangement is the ‘classic’ itinerary covering the highlights of India and Nepal. The major sights visited include imperial Delhi, the Rajasthani ‘pink city’ of Jaipur, Agra and the Taj Mahal, the uniquely magnificent temples and carvings at Khajuraho, spiritually uplifting Varanasi and the Ganges. En route we also visit the Amber Fort and Akbar’s abandoned sandstone capital, Fatehpur Sikri and the enchanting temples of Orcha.
However, the arrangement begins in the former kingdom of Nepal where pressures for social change have recently resulted in this tiny country becoming the world’s newest republic. The friendliness, cheerfulness and welcoming nature of the Nepalis is legendary and lends an air of enchantment to the country’s bewitching scenery and astounding historical sites. The architectural heritage of its principal cities and former capitals is wonderfully well preserved, whilst synthesising Chinese and Indian influence undoubtedly embodies a spirit of its own. A stay in Kathmandu allows for this spirit to be fully explored and also provides the opportunity to view Mount Everest from the air on an optional excursion.
