The highlights of Rajasthan by rail and road

 
 

In brief:

Delhi - 3 nights. Agra - 1 night. Bharatpur - 1 night. Jaipur - 2 nights. Bikaner - 1 night. Jaisalmer - 2 nights. Jodhpur - 1 night. Jojawar - 1 night. Pushkar - 1 night. Kuchaman Fort - 2 nights. Flight - 1 night.

Day 1 Fly direct from London Heathrow to Delhi.

Day 2 Early morning arrival and transfer to the Hotel Crowne Plaza. Afternoon optional sightseeing of Qutab Minar.

Day 3 Travel (chair class) on the Shatabdi Express to Agra. On arrival, visit Agra Fort before checking into the Clarks Shiraz Hotel for an overnight stay. Afternoon optional tour to Sikandra, the tomb of Akbar or Itmad-Daula, the tomb Ghiyas Beg built in 1622.

Day 4 Morning visit to the Taj Mahal before driving to Bharatpur and overnight at the Laxmi Vilas Palace. Afternoon visit to the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary.

Day 5 Drive to Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, for a two-night stay at the Mandawa Haveli Hotel.

Day 6 Full-day sightseeing in Jaipur including the Amber Fort and the City Palace and Observatory.

Day 7 Morning at leisure. Afternoon transfer to the railway station to board the train to Bikaner. The only train available for this journey is not airconditioned. Evening arrival and transfer to the Laxmi Niwas Palace Hotel.

Day 8 Morning tour of the Bikaner Fort complex, its palaces, temples and mosque. Continue by road to Jaisalmer for a two-night stay at the Hotel Gorbandh Palace.

Day 9 Visit the Fort, the havellis and traditional Rajasthani houses. Afternoon optional excursion to the Sam Sand dunes.

Day 10 Morning drive to Jodhpur for an overnight stay at the Umeed Hotel.

Day 11 Visit Mehrangarh Fort, founded in 1459 and standing 125 metres above the surrounding plain and continue to the Jaswant Thada an imposing white marble centotaph. Continue to Jojawar near Deogarh and overnight at the Rawla Jojawar Hotel.

Day 12 The journey between Jojawar and Pushkar includes a short, scenic train ride, embarking at Deogarh, on a line built for the British Officers in the time of the Raj. Overnight at the Jagat Singh Palace Hotel, Pushkar.

Day 13 Morning at leisure to explore Pushkar’s temples and sacred lake before driving to Kuchaman for a two-night stay at the fort.

Day 14 Full-day at leisure to explore the fort and visit the local bazaars.

Day 15 Drive to Ajmer to board the Shatabdi Express for Delhi for an overnight stay at the Crowne Plaza.

Day 16 Full-day sightseeing tour of New and Old Delhi including a visit to the National Railway Museum and a drive past the Red Fort before transferring to the airport for the return flight.

Day 17 Morning flight to London Heathrow arriving later the same day.
