Any visit to India is best started in the ‘Golden Triangle’ that comprises Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. The imperial glory of the Mughals is revealed in the mausoleums, mosques and palaces of their capitals at Agra, Delhi and Fatehpur Sikri, the highlight being the incomparable Taj Mahal. Jaipur introduces the princely heritage of Rajasthan. The era of the British Raj is reflected in the architectural heritage of Lutyens’ New Delhi, the summer hill station capital, Shimla, and administrative centre of McLeod Ganj (upper Dharamsala). The latter now has achieved further prominence as the centre of the Tibetan Government in Exile and residence of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism.

The Rajasthani wildlife park of Ranthambore displays another aspect of India’s natural beauty with the chance to spot the elusive tiger, contrasting with Sikhism’s most holy shrine, the spectacular Golden Temple at Amritsar. Train journeys that are part of the Indian experience include the unforgettable narrow gauge toy train from Shimla, which descends from over 1,800 metres through countless tunnels and bridges during a scenically spectacular descent. Travel on Days 11-16 in 4x4 vehicles with 4 passenger seats (window).
