Downstream Itinerary
Day 1 Fly from your chosen airport via Dubai to Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) arriving the following morning.
Day 2 Transfer to the 5-star Oberoi for an overnight stay.
Day 3 Afternoon train journey (6 hrs) to New Farakka station. Transfer to the RV Sukapha.
Day 4 A full-day excursion visits the town of Gaur, close to English Bazaar (now the town of Malda). Once one of India’s great cities, which has many mosques and palace remains.
Day 5 Sail down the Hoogly proper to Baranagar. Continue to Murshidabad and visit the Nawab’s great Hazarduari Palace, the Katra mosque and the late 18th-century palaces of Nashipara and Katgola.
Day 6 By rickshaw to the Khushbagh, a peaceful Moghul-style garden. Cruise to the battlefield of Plassey, where in 1757 Clive of India defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah, to visit the commemorative obelisk. Continue to Katwa, a market town.
Day 7 Visit the brassworking village of Matiari, the temples of Mayapur and the banyan tree at Nabadwip.
Day 8 Sail to Kalna. Take cycle rickshaws to the terracotta temples. Visit Imambara on the outskirts of Kolkata.
Day 9 Visit the Dutch cemetery at Chinsura and Chandernagore. Land at Barrackpore and walk through the cantonment past the Semaphore Tower, Government House, the Temple of Fame and Flagstaff House, its garden housing many of the British statues removed from central Kolkata.
Day 10 Sail on under the Howrah Bridge to central Kolkata. Morning sightseeing includes the Victoria memorial, St. John’s church and atmospheric South Park Street cemetery. Transfer to the Oberoi Hotel for overnight.
Day 11 Transfer to the airport for the return flight to the UK via Dubai arriving later the same day.
