Vietnam is not only historic and scenically beautiful, but also thought-provoking and moving. In central Vietnam, the palace and tombs of the former capital, Hue, are reminiscent of the Forbidden City and Terracotta Army in China, whilst Ha Long Bay more than equals the scenic beauty of Guilin. Hoi An old town and the Mekong waterways are a pleasing contrast to the modernity of Saigon and Hanoi. The history museums reveal that the French and then Americans were the ‘invaders’ here, with the Chinese and Thai not far behind. The Cu Chi tunnels and Presidential Palace with helicopter and exhibition present a snapshot of the ‘American War’, as they call the ‘Vietnam War’, and the Ho Chi Minh memorial is reminiscent of Mao or Lenin. Enjoy a drink in an atmospheric location at the rooftop bars of the Rex or Caravelle in Saigon, which attained iconic status during the war. The water puppet show and Saigon river cruise provide colourful entertainment – the latter a reminder of Vietnam’s close association with its waterways.
