Tibet
The rarefied, bleak beauty of the landscape is one of the main attractions of Tibet. Otherwise much of what you see revolves around religion - the monasteries, most notably the Potala Palace, still functioning much as they always have, darkened by smoking candles and reeking of yak butter, are extraordinarily atmospheric.
