The Irrawaddy Flotilla Company was established by Scots merchants in 1865 and by the 1920s ran over 650 vessels on the rivers of Burma. In 1942 the fleet was scuppered when the Japanese invaded, then in 1995 revived by the Burma historian Paul Strachan, offering pioneering cruises on the Irrawaddy River, first restoring an original Clyde-built steamer and then building new replicas. Pandaw supports the local economy and suppliers are small local businesses. Pandaw passengers have helped support local schools and relief work after Cyclone Nargis in 2008. The Irrawaddy traverses mountains, jungles and plains of this ‘Golden Land’, enabling visits to Burma’s main sites in some comfort.

* Whilst the vessels carry more, the maximum group size for transfers and excursions is 30.
