The Mediterranean was an important route for merchants and travellers in ancient times, allowing for trade and cultural exchange. It was known by the Romans as Mare Nostrum, Latin for ‘Our Sea’, but employed other names including Mare Internum, meaning ‘The Internal Sea’. The Mediterranean way of life is thought to be an ideal balance of fine climate and exquisite food, which has no doubt influenced many of our lives.
