Spread across seven hills overlooking the enormously expansive estuary of the Tagus, the magnificence of Lisbon derives from a combination of its setting, layout, rich history and unquestionable charm. One of Lisbon’s hills, the Alfama, was developed by the Moors and retains a medieval street plan and much of its original citadel. Separating the hills in the valley below lays one of Europe’s earliest and finest experiments in city planning. Here, a succession of beautiful Baroque squares and tree-lined avenues lead from the former royal palace on the banks of the Tagus, to the summit of a hill behind, crowned at its apex with a belvedere, and Lisbon’s largest park. With unlimited free use of the city’s transport system, using a 3-day Lisbon Card, we offer all these key sites, together with complimentary or reduced museum and monument entrances.
