VJV travellers on our ‘Northern Lights’ expeditions have many times asked if they can stay in an ‘Ice Hotel’, so we are delighted to present this opportunity at the most northern ‘Ice Hotel’ within the Arctic Circle near Alta, the largest town in Finnmark.
The Igloo Hotel is re-built each year for the past 15 years (about 1 month of work for the hotelier!). It opens in January, melting away by springtime, so the chance to experience such a unique construction is limited to the winter months of January to March. This coincides with the best time of year to view the Northern Lights during a winter that has been classified as one of the best for viewing opportunities in the Northern Lights cycle.
Norway in winter offers a multitude of activities; dramatic mountain scenery, winter walking and activities with the chance to see the Northern Lights, Sami culture and reindeer. Sami tribesman fish the river Altaelvar for its salmon (once a popular haunt of sporting 19th-century English aristocrats). The Alta museum, which previously won ‘Museum of the Year’ is located a taxi or bus ride away in nearby Hjemmeluft, featuring exhibits relating to the Alta River from the Stone Age Komsa culture through to modern hydroelectric projects.
*Some transfers and Northern lights excursion on Day 1 may be a larger group size.
