Sicily, once named Trinacria by the Romans because of its triangular shape, is the largest island in the Mediterranean and has the tallest active volcano in Europe, Etna. The island’s fascinating history has seen it ruled by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans and although today part of the Republic of Italy, it remains distinctive culturally. It was Goethe who said ‘Without Sicily, Italy leaves no image in the soul. Sicily is the key to everything’.
This programme is based in Letojanni, a relaxed beach resort on the east of the island. Close by is the charming town of Taormina with its elegant shops, characteristic bars, fine restaurants and captivating views of the coastline below and the often snow-capped peak of Mount Etna, high above. A selection of optional excursions is available, bookable locally and subject to availability.
