The Northern Lights are created by solar particles attracted to the Pole colliding with the Earth’s atmosphere, so the further North, the greater the chance of viewing them, although a natural phenomenon cannot, of course, be guaranteed. Iceland, lying on the edge of the Arctic Circle, is well-placed to observe this literal highlight and is enhanced by the ecologically friendly environment and lack of atmospheric pollution – especially at night outside the capital, ‘in the middle of nowhere’. In winter, the snow and ice add a dramatic perspective to the wild landscapes. The last ‘lights’ season was very popular, so it is advisable to book early to ensure your place.
