Recent events have added emphasis to our ‘Geysers & Glaciers’ presentation of Iceland as the ‘Land of Ice & Fire’ where nature’s forces have been active since pushed up from the North Atlantic seabed by volcanic forces that are still alive today. The country is so newly formed in geological terms that 70% of the country is not yet ready for human habitation, being still covered by glaciers, lava fields and harsh terrain – and the local people heat their houses from geothermal sources beneath them! In our civilised society we rarely give thought to the mysteries of the forces within our planet but in Iceland these invade the imagination as they erupt from the surface by means of volcanoes and geysers. One can easily imagine that the barrier between the earth’s surface and natural elements beneath, is at its flimsiest in Iceland and it is thus scarcely surprising that Jules Verne in his classic novel was inspired to choose Iceland for the eccentric Professor Lidenbrock and phlegmatic Icelandic guide to start their ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth'!
We have added a South Iceland tour viewing the recently erupting Eyjafjallajökull volcano (from a distance!) and visiting coastal villages, spectacular shorelines, waterfalls and homesteads, following the coast to Skógafoss waterfall and Vik.
Stay in Reykjavik and explore Iceland's wild interior of hot springs, geothermal sites, waterfalls, geysers, rock formations and snow-capped landscapes.
In winter the waterfalls display a frozen beauty, snowy landscapes and hot springs are more spectacular and the ‘Northern Lights’ make regular appearances due to Iceland’s position on the Arctic Circle and lack of industrial air pollution.
