Olympia was the classical site of the Olympic Games first held in 776BC in honour of the Greek god Zeus. Originally featuring only sprinting, then with wrestling, boxing and riding - with, non-Greeks not allowed before, as a pagan event, it died out in 393AD. Athens hosted the first modern Olympics in 1896, as well as more recently in 2004. Enjoyment of the imminent games in London 2012 will undoubtedly be enhanced by a deeper understanding of the Olympic history.

This cruise spends a full day at ancient Olympia, including a visit to the the Olympic Museum and the Temple of Hera, where the modern Olympic Games torch is lit and then carried to that year’s Olympic country. One of the most attractive ways of currently visiting Greece is by ship.During this quieter season explore without the crowds some of the finest ancient sites from the Acropolis to the theatre of Epidaurus and the Oracle of Delphi with talks by a guest lecturer both on board and at classical sites.

From theatres to temples, caves to archaeological sites and museums, enjoy morning explorations of areas rich in ancient history and culture, then relax as you circumnavigate the Peloponnese, enjoying the glittering Aegean and Ionian seas and traversing the Corinth Canal.
