From the Rhine to the Danube

The historic towns and rolling hills of Franconia and Bavaria from Strasbourg to Passau

7 nights from £947

Europe’s most famous rivers are linked by the Rhine-Main- Danube Canal, 106 miles across the European watershed via 16 locks. Built in 1992 it completes the link between the North Sea and Black Sea from Rotterdam to Romania. This itinerary allows for extensive cruising by day (and sometimes by night) on the Southern Rhine, Main and Danube rivers. Visit some of Germany’s most historic and picturesque towns, such as Regensburg, originally the most northern navigable port on the Danube and Rothenburg on the Romantic Road and Passau at the confluence of the Danube with the Inn and Ilz rivers. Cruising on a French ship is somehow appropriate as Franconia’s name derives from the eastern part of Charlemagne’s Empire of the Franks, whilst France derives from the western parts.

The Rhine and Danube were borders for the Romans, the lands of the Main River were never conquered with contrasting origins and their own unique flavour.
