Estonia, formerly a member of the Soviet Union, was influenced and dominated by other Baltic countries and only recently gained its independence in 1991. The capital Tallinn offers beautiful medieval buildings, Baroque monuments and winding cobble-stone streets. Nearby St. Petersburg is home to the impressive Hermitage Museum, founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and is one of the largest and oldest museums in the world, holding an impressive collection of artwork within its six historic buildings along the Neva River.

In Finland, visit Helsinki with its elegant Neo-classical architecture situated around the cathedral area and medieval Turku, the original capital and oldest city of Finland. Concurrently with Tallinn, Turku was ‘European Capital of Culture in 2011’ and its notable sites are the castle and cathedral, regarded as some of the most valuable monuments of architectural history in Finland.

Perhaps one of the most colourful and friendliest of cities, Copenhagen combines Scandinavian elegance with European joie de vivre. Surrounded by water and symbolised by the bronze figure of Hans Andersen’s ‘Little Mermaid’ in the harbour, the skyline is of copper spires, domes and gables with an endless network of streets, squares and canals which can be easily explored on foot.
