The Sound of Salzburg

Exploring the architectural, artistic, musical and religious heritage of the city of Mozart and the 'Sound of Music'

3 nights from £295 or 4 nights from £549

Salzburg was for one thousand years an independently ruled Archbishopric with a resulting concentration of about 40 fine churches from the Romanesque and Gothic periods to Baroque and Rococo. Revenue from the nearby Salt (Salz) mines allowed the Archbishops to also create fine palaces and a great medieval fortress (Burg) that dominated the town and was a safe refuge in troubled times.

The arrangement includes a dinner and concert at the Peterskeller, a former monastery (AD 696) whose restaurant is as old as the cloister. On a more light-hearted ‘musical note’ the recently revived West End production of the ‘Sound of Music’ is a reminder of more contemporary links with Salzburg and an optional excursion is available to places and landscapes linked with and featured in the film.

Advent, Christmas & New Year
This is a charming time to visit Salzburg, surrounded by snow-covered mountains. Around the cathedral Salzburg’s Christmas market tempts with honeycake, special breads, roasted chestnuts, mulled wine and gingerbread, dried flowers and hand-painted decorations. On departures Dec 22 & 29 a full-day ‘Horse Drawn Sleigh Ride’ excursion is included and on Christmas Eve a visit is arranged to the ‘Silent Night Chapel’ in Oberndorf.
