Advent by the Lakes
A winter lakeside sojourn including Christmas Markets and dinner at The White Horse Inn
3 nights from £547
Salzburg’s lakes lie less than an hour’s drive away, set in magnificent alpine scenery and known as the Salzkammergut, which literally means ‘the treasure house of the salt’ (revenue from the salt mines financed Salzburg’s magnificent buildings).
The words ‘Im Salzkammergut, da kann man gut lustig sein’, are quoted from Benatzky’s operetta ‘Im weißen Rössl am Wolfgangsee‘ (The White Horse Inn), set in the still-existing inn at St. Wolfgang. Its meaning is simple but appropriate to this stay: ‘You can have a good time in the Salzkammergut!’ Charming St. Wolgang lies on the most famous of Salzburg’s lakes and was once refuge to Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson. Steamers on the lake allow easy access to villages around the lake where special arrangements for Advent have been organised.
