A Grand Tour of Tunisia
‘Roman Africa’, the scenic North, medinas, ksour, the Sahara and the coast
Day 1 Fly from London Gatwick to Tunis. Transfer to the Tunisian 5-star Hotel El Mouradi Gammarth for two nights.
Day 2 Visit to the remains of Carthage, the picture postcard village of Sidi Bou Said and to the centre of Tunis, with time in the medina.
Day 3 Travel north to the medina and ancient harbour of Bizerte, then to the port of Tabarka in the north-west. Overnight in the Tunisian 4-star Hotel El Mouradi Hammam Bourguiba.
Day 4 Visit Chemtou and then Bulla Regia with its underground Roman Villas. Continue to Dougga with its fine temples, theatre and baths. Overnight at Le Kef in the Tunisian 3-star Hotel Lepin.
Day 5 Visit the Roman site of Maktharis then visit Roman Sufetula. Continue to Tozeur for two nights at the Tunisian 4-star Hotel Ramla.
Day 6 Excursion from Metlaoui to the gorge of Selja by Red Lizard train. An optional visit (bookable locally) by 4x4 vehicle through the desert towards the Algerian border to the oases of Tamerza, a carefully preserved old mud-brick village, and Chebika with dramatic views of the palmery and gurgling springs.
Day 7 Visit the old medina to explore the old traditions and visit the Dar Cherait museum. Travel through the desert to Douz and visit the small Sahara museum. Optional camel ride. Overnight at the Tunisian 4-star Hotel Melia Mouradi Douz.
Day 8 Travel to Matmata to explore the Berber troglodyte houses. Visit the ksar of Medenine en route to Zarzis for three nights at the Tunisian 4-star Hotel Odyssée Zarzis.
Day 9 Travel south to Tataouine and to visit different ksour (fortress granaries) such as Ksar Hadada.
Day 10 Full-day tour to the island of Djerba visiting the synagogue of its long established Jewish community, Guellala, and Borj Gasi Mutapha fort. Afternoon visit to the town of Zarzis with its small archaeological museum.
Day 11* Visit the market of Gabes continuing to El Djem to visit the Roman amphitheatre. Four nights at the 5-star Hotel Mouradi Palace at Port El Kantaoui.
Day 12* Visit Kairouan, the Holy City, to visit the Great Mosque of Sidi Oqba, the Mausoleum of Sidi Sahbi and the medina with its picturesque shops.
Day 13* Full-day excursion to the Cap Bon including Hammamet medina and the Carthaginian site Kerkouane.
Day 14 Visit the town of Monastir, the Ribat and the medina. Return to Sousse to explore the old town.
Day 15 Visit the Bardo Museum, home to extensive Numidian, Punic and Roman mosaics and statuary (due to flight timings departures November to March visit the Bardo museum on the afternoon of Day 1). Transfer to Tunis airport for the return flight to London Gatwick.
*Itinerary Note - 2008 departures
In 2008 the itinerary for days 11 to 13 is slightly different. On Day 11 visit the oasis of Gabes and the medina at Sfax and an overnight stay at the Hotel Sfax; on Day 12 there will be a visit to El Djem followed by Kairouan and on Day 13 the market of Nabeul will be visited.
