La Reunion
The unspoilt Indian Ocean island of Réunion, with an included excursion to the Cirque of Cilaos and an option to extend in Mauritius
9 nights from £1195
The spectacular natural treasures of the volcanic island of Réunion are relatively unexplored, mass tourism having passed this stunning destination by. The island more than makes up for an scarcity of white-sand beaches with wildly dramatic landscapes, forbidding mountains and gorges reminiscent of Nepal or New Zealand. The fl ora and fauna meanwhile is more comparable to that of nearby Mauritius. Réunion has three major mountain zones, the Cirques of Cilaos, Salazie and Mafate, and volcano Piton-de-la-Fournaise, which erupts regularly (but safely!). The winding mountain road leading to the dramatic Cirque de Cilaos reveals colourful fi elds of fl owers, forests of indigenous trees, soaring rock faces and pounding waterfalls. The name ‘Cilaos’ is said to originate from the Malagasy word Tsilaosa, meaning “the place one never leaves” and was once a refuge for runaway slaves. Our base for exploration, from where excursions are offered, is the peaceful resort of Saint Leu on the island’s west coast. This former fi shing village has a small beach and colourful local market.
