Luxor, ancient Thebes, stretches along the east bank of the Nile with the centrally located Hotel Nile Palace providing an ideal base for a leisurely sojourn. Rain hardly ever falls here and with the Corniche running the entire length of the waterfront independent exploration of this small city can be on foot, by horse-drawn open carriages or white-sailed feluccas on the river.

The first-time visitor should explore the most famous tombs of the West Bank and Karnak and Luxor temples but in fact the area around Luxor can reveal much more. Recent changes of regulations now allow excursions from Luxor by road to less-visited but rewarding sites, being especially of interest for the returning traveller who has already undertaken a Nile cruise or Luxor stay. To the north, the Temple of Hathor at Denderah has decorated, coloured walls and a representation of Cleopatra, whilst Abydos was the necropolis of the Pharaohs. To the south, el-Kab reveals the Temple of Nekhbet dating back to the Old Kingdom and highly decorated tombs from the New Kingdom period. The tombs of dignitaries at el-Moalla are a rare survivor from the First Intermediate Period.

A shorter excursion to Garagoz explores more recent Egyptian life with a visit to a traditional farm, pottery workshop and to a small Coptic monastery. Additionally, a second visit to the West Bank of Thebes reveals additional temples and tombs not included on a first visit. An independent visit to the small Luxor Museum is also recommended.

† Included UK airport lounge access on departures May 2010 onwards.

Exclusive VJV Event - Luxor Temple Private Reception
Those who rediscovered ancient Egypt in the 18th and 19th centuries enjoyed magical overnight stays and this has prompted us to arrange private evening access to the Luxor temple, enhanced by striking illumination, to savour the unique night-time atmosphere. A private reception has been arranged at the temple exclusively for the guests of Voyages Jules Verne. Enjoy a cocktail served by staff in pharaonic uniform at the illuminated Luxor Temple before strolling through the temple unimpeded by other visitors. A recording of Verdi’s Aida, once staged in the temple, will provide a musical background to the occasion and local musicians will play the Egyptian ‘takht’ music. Note: During May-Oct, a cocktail reception at the Old Winter Palace followed by a visit to the illuminated Luxor Temple.
