An inspiring introduction to India’s colours and culture, visiting eight UNESCO sites, and iconic landmarks from Jodhpur to Jaipur and Agra, from Delhi to Shimla and Amritsar

An apt opening to the tour, we begin at the ‘Gateway of India’ arch, on the waterfront of Mumbai. In Udaipur admire the graceful façades of temples and palaces reflected in Lake Pichola’s waters then drive to Jodhpur in the stark Thar Desert, where the immense Mehrangarh Fort towers above the blue-painted buildings and stepped alleyways at its feet. Blue hues give way to pink in Jaipur, the regal 18th-century Pink City of palaces, now with clusters of colourful spice stalls and artisan shops. A complete change of scene and tempo takes us to Ranthambore National Park, the former hunting grounds of Jaipur Maharajas, now famed as a tiger habitat, then return from the wild to one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, Agra’s inimitable Taj Mahal. Delhi assaults the senses with a chaos of cultural heritage, and countless relics of its chequered past; we travel by train to Amritsar, its Golden Temple the highlight of this Sikh holy city; drive east to beguiling Shimla, its head often in the clouds, its Himalayan hillside no stranger to carpets of snow; and experience the Toy Train’s superbly scenic journey to Kalka.
